What people say after we've been

Plumbers in the Melbourne CBD, Docklands and Southbank

Fix-It Right has been looking after Melbourne homes since Richie started the business in 2007, and across the city we've done more than 6,000 jobs in the last two years alone. The inner city is the busiest and most demanding part of it, and it's work we know inside out.

The CBD, Docklands and Southbank aren't like the rest of Melbourne. They're high-rise apartments and towers, strata buildings with plumbing shared between dozens of homes, and the older city blocks of East and West Melbourne sitting on some of the oldest sewers in the state. Add tight access, no parking, security doors and body corporates, and a job that's simple in the suburbs needs a different approach here.

The call we get most in the apartments and towers is leak detection. In a building where homes sit on top of each other, a leak on one level shows up as a stain on someone else's ceiling two floors down, and the hard part is finding where the water is actually coming from before anyone starts opening up walls. We use proper leak detection to pinpoint the source first, so the right wall gets opened once, not three times.

In the older streets and the city-edge terraces and warehouses, it's the drains. Century-old sewer lines take tree roots, grease and collapses, and clearing a blockage without looking at why it blocked just buys you a few months. We camera the line, find the real cause, and where a pipe is past clearing we can often reline it rather than dig up a heritage building.

The rest is the everyday work of a dense, lived-in city: taps and toilets in the thousands of rentals and apartments, hot water systems packed into cupboards and plant rooms, and burst and leaking pipes in old buildings that feel it most through a Melbourne winter. Whatever it is, we carry what's needed to fix it on the spot wherever we can.

This is where the Fix-It Right way earns its name. In a tower, getting it wrong isn't a return visit, it's water through three apartments, a body-corporate dispute and an access problem that takes a week to arrange again. In a heritage building it's damage you can't undo. So we don't guess and we don't patch over the symptom to get out the door. We find the cause, fix it properly, and back it with our 10-year workmanship guarantee, because in the inner city more than anywhere, the only cheap job is the one that's done right the first time.

And it's not just the city. Those same standards go into every one of the 6,000-plus jobs we do across Melbourne, from the inner-city towers to the bayside, the east and the outer suburbs. Wherever you are, you can see below exactly who we are, the real jobs we've done and the plumbers who would come to you.

The same plumber, start to finish

The plumber who comes out and works out what's wrong is the one who fixes it, and he stays with your job from start to finish until it's done properly, top to bottom. We don't send one person to look and another to do the work, and we never pull your plumber off your job to chase the next call. Not many plumbing companies anywhere are that strict about it, and it's why the job gets done right the first time.

Why we fix it so it lasts, and why that's cheaper for you

Most plumbing gets fixed twice. Once when it breaks, and again when the quick fix gives out. The first visit is rarely the expensive part. The expensive part is the second bill, the day off work, and the water that got into the floor while nobody was looking.

I learned that in 2008 on a toilet in Seaford. The customer's previous plumber had been out every three months for a year, adding a washer each time and charging a small fee. Four visits for the same leak. It wasn't the washer. It was a thirty-year-old valve being hammered by pressure that was too high. We replaced the valve, regulated the pressure, and it was fixed. Not for three months. For good.

That's the job we want to do at your place. Once. Then you forget our name, which honestly is the best review a plumber can get.

Melbourne houses fail in Melbourne ways

A Fitzroy terrace with no side access and a terracotta drain that's older than the tree growing into it. A Brunswick weatherboard with galvanised pipe from the sixties turning the water brown. A Docklands apartment where the pressure problem is three floors down in the plant room, not in the kitchen tap. Our plumbers have seen all of them more times than they can count, and the fix is different every time.

Whatever it is, we'll look it over, tell you what's actually going on, and give you three options with prices.

The Service Call

How a Fix-It Right plumber works in your Melbourne home

  1. We take the time to understand your concern.

    We Say G'day

Most people have no idea what's about to happen when a plumber walks in. How long it'll take. What it'll cost. Whether they'll be talked into something. If they've never used us before, they're standing there with a head full of questions they haven't asked yet.

So the first thing our plumber does isn't plumbing.

They confirm your name. They check the van's not blocking you in. They ask you to tell them more about what's been happening. They ask whether you'd like shoes on or off. Then they ask if they can take thirty seconds to explain how the visit will go.

    They ask. It's your house.

Those thirty seconds are the whole point. Once you know what's coming, the questions stop being worries. You can see the person in front of you has done this before.

  2. Thorough evaluation. A full check of the system, not just the symptom.

    We Listen

Years ago I took a call late on a Saturday afternoon in Edithvale. Their old hot water system had split, family with kids to get to bed. I put in the unit I'd have chosen for my own house, tested it, got paid, and left thinking I'd done a good job.

They rang the next morning. A pipe had let go overnight and flooded the bathroom through into the house. The carpet was ruined.

I went straight back. It was a flexi hose, rusted through, years old. It had nothing to do with the work I'd done and it was going to fail whether I'd been there or not. It just happened to go that night.

But I'd been in that house. I'd been standing next to it. And I hadn't looked.

So now we look at everything. Every job, every house, whether you called us about it or not. The thing that floods your house at two in the morning is almost never the thing you rang about.

Before they start looking, your plumber will say something like this:

"I'm going to check the rest of the plumbing to make sure everything's in good shape. I'm not expecting to find anything, but if I do, is that something you'd like to know about?"

Most people say yes. Some say no, and that's fine too.

  3. Clear choices, explained in plain English. Nothing happens until you say yes.

    We Explain Your Options

Plenty of trades will ask what you're looking to spend before they'll give you a price. We don't do that. You can't answer it properly until you know what things cost, and asking first only tells us how much you'll wear.

The plumbing in a house is usually all linked, so we look at the whole system before we put a price on anything.

Then you get three options. The first is the fix that gets you out of trouble. The last takes care of everything we found. And there's one in between.

Then we pass it over to you. You know your house and what can wait.

All of them are proper fixes. And whatever you see before we start is what's on the invoice at the end.

  4. Most jobs sorted on the day.

    We Get To Work

Once you've chosen, we start. Not another appointment, not another plumber. The same person who looked at it and priced it does the work, straight away.

That matters more than it sounds. When the person quoting is the person doing the job, they can't hand you a number they wouldn't want to stand behind an hour later. And they're not watching the clock to get to the next one. There's no more important customer than the one we're standing in front of.

Every job runs to the same list, start to finish. Drop sheets down, water off, the work done properly, and the place left the way they found it.

My dad said if something's worth doing, it's worth doing right. He was talking about the house he was building for us to live in. That's the standard we ask our plumbers to work to in yours.

  5. The five-star finish.

We Show You Your New Plumbing

Before your plumber leaves, they'll walk you through what they've done. Not a summary from the driveway. They'll actually show you the work, and how to use anything new if there's something to learn.

It's the same list we went through at the start. This is where you get to check we did what we said we'd do, while the person who did it is still standing next to you.

Then we sort the paperwork and payment out on the spot, so there's nothing landing in your inbox next week for work you never saw.

The person behind the name

“If something's worth doing, it's worth doing right.”

Richie learned that from his dad in a shed in Langwarrin, spent four years welding food-grade stainless where a weld is either right or it isn't, and started the business in 2007 with an ad in the local paper and a ute he set up himself. In 2015 he renamed it after his dad's rule: Fix-It Right. Every plumber on the team still trains with him weekly.

Melbourne plumbing questions

Do you work on apartments and high-rise in the Melbourne CBD, Docklands and Southbank?

Yes. A lot of inner-city work is apartments, towers and strata buildings with shared plumbing and tight access. We're used to the access, the shared systems and the body-corporate side of things, and we sort the problem without the drama.

Can you fix low water pressure in a Melbourne apartment?

Often yes. We'll check what's happening inside your apartment first, then work out whether it's something we can fix at your end or whether it involves the building's shared infrastructure, and tell you straight either way.

How do you clear a blocked drain in a tight inner-city property?

We look at the access and the blockage before choosing the method, which might be a camera inspection, high-pressure jetting or relining. Inner-city properties often have old sewers and awkward access, so we work out the right approach rather than forcing one.

Do you service older heritage buildings around East and West Melbourne?

Yes. The older city-edge streets have Victorian terraces, warehouses and some of the oldest sewers in Melbourne. We camera the drains, find the cause and work carefully on heritage buildings rather than guessing.

Who's my water authority in the Melbourne CBD?

Greater Western Water covers the CBD, Docklands, Southbank and the inner city. If the issue is at the meter or the connection at the street, that's their responsibility, and we'll help you sort what's yours from what's theirs.

Do you do commercial or strata plumbing in the CBD?

We're primarily a residential plumbing business, so our focus is homes and apartments. If your enquiry is a strata or commercial job, give us a call and we'll let you know whether it's something we can help with.
