Turns out filming a job takes longer than doing the job.

Film coming soon

Fix the burst, then fix the reason

A pipe doesn't burst for no reason. It's rusted through from the inside, the water pressure in the house is too high, a root has crushed it, the ground has moved, or it froze. Patch the hole and leave the reason, and the next weak spot is already on its way. So we do both: we stop the water and repair the burst properly, then we find out why it went and deal with that too, whether it's a pressure limiting valve or replacing pipes that are past it. Fixed for good, not fixed for now.

A burst you can see, or one you can't?

Some bursts announce themselves: water spraying in the garden, a puddle that won't drain, a ceiling dripping. Others hide. A pipe under a slab or inside a wall can leak for weeks before you see it, and the signs are quieter: a water bill that's jumped, the sound of running water when every tap is off, a damp patch on a wall or floor, or the water meter still turning with everything shut. Either way, turn the water off at the meter and call us. If you can see it, we'll go straight to it. If you can't, our leak detection team will find it.

Why pipes burst

Most bursts have one of five causes. Old galvanised steel pipes rust from the inside until the wall is paper thin. Water pressure that's too high puts every pipe, joint and tap under constant strain, and the weakest one gives first. Tree roots wrap around and crush pipes in the yard. Ground movement, from dry summers, wet winters or building work nearby, cracks pipes and pulls joints apart. And in Canberra and Ballarat winters, water left in an exposed pipe can freeze and split it.

Here's the part that matters: those causes don't stop at one pipe. If one length of galvanised has rusted through, the rest of it is the same age. If your pressure is too high, it's too high everywhere. That's why we always look at why yours burst, not just where.

How we sort yours

Water off first. Before anything else, we make sure the water is off and the damage has stopped spreading. If you couldn't find your meter, we'll show you where it is so you know next time. And you'll know the price of the first step before we touch a thing.

We find exactly where it is. If the burst is in plain sight, we go straight to it. If it's hidden under a slab or inside a wall, our leak detection team pinpoints it first, so we open up the smallest area possible instead of guessing.

We fix it properly. The damaged section is cut out and replaced, not taped or clamped and left for next time.

We find out why it burst. We check your water pressure and the age and condition of your pipes, and we show you what we find.

We stop it happening again. If the pressure is too high, a pressure limiting valve protects every pipe and tap in the house. If the pipes are past it, we'll show you and price replacing them.

A report for your insurer. If there's damage to claim, we'll give you a report with photos, the cause and what we did.

Through all of it, you only ever face one decision at a time. You'll know what the next step costs before it starts, and nothing proceeds until you're ready.

What we'll recommend, and why

Our rule is a simple one: we only recommend work you'll benefit from. If the burst was a one-off, from a root or a knock, we'll repair it and that's the end of it. If your pressure is too high, we'll show you the reading and recommend a pressure limiting valve, because it protects every pipe, joint and tap in the house. And if your pipes are old galvanised that's rusting from the inside, we'll show you a cut section and tell you honestly that more bursts are coming, then price re-piping with new copper or PEX, whole house or the worst sections first. If we've noticed something else along the way, we'll show you that too: priced, in priority order, your call at your pace.

We get our job right so that you can keep going with yours.

What it costs

Fixing the burst and fixing the reason it burst are two different decisions, and we price them that way: you'll never get one blurred quote covering the repair, a pressure limiting valve and re-piping. Finding a hidden leak is priced before it starts too. Every price is agreed before work starts.

If the burst has damaged your home, your insurance may cover the damage. We'll give you a report with photos, the cause and what we did, so your claim has what it needs. And if the repair has landed at a bad time, Fix-It Now - Pay Later gives you 12 months with no interest and no repayments.

We had a leak we couldn't find - looking at the water meter I could see a ton of water being used, but no idea where it was going. Arron and his apprentice came around the next day and tracked it down (under the driveway), then had it fixed and the drive patched by the end of the day - very professional, very thorough, and really hard workers. While Arron was there, he also gave me some advice on getting a separate long-running issue fixed (large amounts of water pooling under the foundations of the house). To fix it Arron and his guys put in an agi drain and a sump pump for us. It took three days underneath the house, and involved digging through lots of rock - hard work! They did a great job, the whole area is now in great shape. I'd definitely recommend these guys - I was impressed with their ability to solve a problem, walk through the options, then deliver on what they said they would.

We had leaking pipe/tap in the kitchen, and we used Fix It Right's online forms to book a request for a plumber to come out urgently. Shanae from FIR was on the phone to me within 5 minutes locking in a time for one of their plumbers to come out to us. Chris came to us at the agreed time, replaced our tap, and also fixed some other plumbing issues we'd been putting off for a while. All in all we were happy with the end result, and felt FIR were very responsive to our needs.

Prevention

The cheapest burst pipe is the one that never happens. A pressure limiting valve is one of the best things you can do for an older home: it takes the strain off every pipe, joint, tap and appliance. Fix-It Right Care Plan members get a home safety inspection every year, which is a good moment to have your pressure checked and your pipes looked at before one lets go.

The Fix-It Right Care Plan

Areas we service

We fix burst pipes across Melbourne, Geelong, Canberra and Ballarat: same process, same training, same 10-year warranty wherever you are.

Burst pipe questions

What should I do first?

Turn the water off at the meter, usually at the front of the property near the street. Turn the tap clockwise until it stops. Then call us. If water is near power points or lights, keep clear of them.

How do you find a leak I can't see?

Our leak detection team pinpoints it before anything is opened up, even under a slab or inside a wall. That means we cut into the smallest area possible, instead of digging around looking for it.

Will my insurance cover it?

Often the damage the water caused is covered, so check your policy. We'll give you a report with photos, the cause and what we did, so your claim has what it needs.

Why did my pipe burst?

Usually one of five things: old galvanised pipe rusting through, water pressure that's too high, tree roots, ground movement, or a pipe freezing in a cold snap. We'll find out which, and deal with it so it doesn't happen again.

What is a pressure limiting valve, and do I need one?

It's a valve at your meter that keeps the pressure in your house at a safe level. If yours is too high, every pipe, joint and tap is under strain all the time. We'll check your pressure and tell you honestly whether you need one.

What every job comes with

  • $0 call-out. We come out and look things over. If you don't go ahead, you don't pay.

  • Three written quotes. The first gets you out of trouble, the last takes care of everything the whole-home check found, and there's one in between. All of them are proper fixes.

  • Fixed For Good. Done properly the first time, triple tested before we leave, and backed by a 10-year workmanship warranty.

The same plumber, start to finish

The plumber who comes out and works out what's wrong is the one who fixes it, and he stays with your job from start to finish until it's done properly, top to bottom. We don't send one person to look and another to do the work, and we never pull your plumber off your job to chase the next call. Not many plumbing companies anywhere are that strict about it, and it's why the job gets done right the first time.
