Fix-It Right Plumbing

A toilet that stops leaking, and stops keeping you up.

A toilet that won't stop running has a way of getting under your skin. The trickle, the random refill in the middle of the night, especially if it's the ensuite right next to the bed. And if it's really running, it's quietly putting a lot of water down the drain the whole time.

It's rarely a big job, but it's worth getting onto before the water bill shows it. We find what's actually failing in the cistern and fix it, so the noise stops and the toilet just works again.

  • $0 call-out
  • Running cisterns fixed at the part that's failing
  • Leaks at the base fixed properly, pan reseated
  • Water pressure checked
  • 10-year workmanship warranty
  • Fix-It Now - Pay Later: 12 months, nothing to pay

  • No fee for the visit. Pay only if you go ahead
  • Three written quotes before any work starts
  • Licensed plumbers. 10-year workmanship warranty

Watch how we fix a running toilet

We had a whole plan for this video, then three jobs came in. There's always a job.

Film coming soon

Fix the part, then fix the reason

A toilet that runs or leaks has a part that's failing, and usually a reason it failed. The inlet valve that lets water in, the washer that holds it in the cistern, the seal under the pan: each one wears out, and some wear out early because the water pressure in the house is too high. Swap the part and leave the pressure, and you'll be hearing it again. So we find the part that's failing and replace it, then check why it went. Fixed for good, not fixed for now.

Running, or leaking?

A toilet that runs is losing water down the pan: you hear it trickling, or the cistern refills on its own when nobody's used it. Here's a check you can do yourself: put a few drops of food colouring in the cistern and don't flush. If the colour turns up in the bowl, water is getting past the seal. A toilet that leaks is losing water onto the floor: a puddle at the base, a damp patch on the ceiling below, or water around the pipe at the wall. Running costs you water; leaking costs you floors. Either way, we'll find it.

Why toilets run and leak

Inside the cistern, two parts do almost all the work. The inlet valve lets water in and shuts off when the cistern is full. The outlet valve holds the water in until you flush, sealed by a rubber washer. Both wear: the washer perishes, the valve stops shutting off properly, and water slips through. Under the pan, the seal between the toilet and the drain can fail too, and then the leak is on the floor rather than in the bowl.

Here's the part most people never hear: high water pressure wears those parts out faster. If the pressure in your house is too high, the inlet valve is fighting it every time the cistern fills. Replace the valve and leave the pressure, and the new one goes the same way. That's why we check your pressure, not just the part.

How we fix yours

Every toilet job starts with finding out exactly what's failing. And you'll know the price of the first step before we touch a thing.

We find the failing part. We open the cistern and check the inlet valve, the outlet valve and its washer, and for a leak at the base, the seal under the pan. Nothing gets replaced on a guess.

We check the pressure. If it's too high, it's why the part failed, and it'll be why the next one fails too.

We fix it properly. The worn part is replaced, not weighed down or adjusted to buy a few months. A leak at the base means the pan comes up and is reseated on a new seal.

We test it. We flush it, watch it refill and shut off, and check the base is dry before we go.

Through all of it, you only ever face one decision at a time. You'll know what the next step costs before it starts, and nothing proceeds until you're ready.

What we'll recommend, and why

Our rule is a simple one: we only recommend work you'll benefit from. If it's one worn washer, we'll replace it and that's the end of it. If the valves are old and the rest of the cistern is going the same way, we'll show you and price a full cistern service, or a new cistern if it's past saving. If your pressure is too high, we'll show you the reading and recommend a pressure limiting valve, because it protects every tap and fitting in the house, not just the toilet. If we've noticed something else along the way, we'll show you that too: priced, in priority order, your call at your pace.

We get our job right so that you can keep going with yours.

What it costs

Fixing the part and fixing the reason it failed are two different decisions, and we price them that way: you'll never get one blurred quote covering a valve, a new cistern and a pressure limiting valve. Every price is agreed before work starts.

And if the repair has landed at a bad time, Fix-It Now - Pay Later gives you 12 months with no interest and no repayments.

Our reviews from customers with toilet leaks

Thane replaced our old toilet after it started leaking, and I couldn’t be happier with the service. He was friendly and professional. The new toilet was installed quickly and everything was left clean. Happy with the service received. Would definitely recommend Fix it Right Plumbing to anyone needing a reliable plumber!

Very happy with the service I received from Gerry on Friday. He identified the issue with my leaking toilet and was able to source the parts needed to fix it, with great care and precision. I really appreciated the extra time he spent looking at my other toilets and under the sinks to determine whether anything else needed monitoring. It was also especially handy to add another job to the service and have my washing machine connected to the laundry sink. I would highly recommend Gerry for his professionalism, care and attention to detail.

Called Fix It Right Plumbing for the Mornington peninsula and spoke to the lovely Tamara. She arranged for a plumber to come out to fix the toilet cistern. The plumber couldn't come the same day though Tamara kept me informed and arranged it for the following day. The next morning I received an email with the name of the plumber (Ben), his bio and photo, so I would know who to expect. This is a great idea. As promised, Ben called me 20 mins before arriving, which gave me time to contact my mother (as it was for her toilet, not just because I needed to call my mother). Perfect timing as she has some memory issues so.needed to tell her as close as possible to the arrival time. Ben advised the flush valve could be replaced and he also did a check of the plumbing overall. We ended getting a few extra things done, to comply to current standards. Ben was great, very nice, got the job done quickly and efficiently. Would definitely use again, great company, lovely receptionist and lovely plumber.

We pride ourselves on effective communication and customer service, so it’s great to know that came through in your experience. Lauren was highly professional and personable over the phone. She provided a detailed overview of the plumbing company’s services and the procedures involved in attending to my plumbing concerns. Also, not having a call-out fee, should be a huge attraction for potential customers; we can focus on paying for the actual services rendered. I will post a follow-up review once the plumber has addressed the specific issues. UPDATE: FIRP's office contacted me on the agreed date to inform me of the plumber's ETA and to confirm my availability. They also sent me a photo of the designated plumber with a short bio (nice touch as it humanises the business-customer relationship). Blaze (from the Canberra office) assessed my specific plumbing issue. He also enquired about the various plumbing outlets throughout my home (e.g. bathrooms, toilets, taps and outdoor (garden) hoses. He provided detailed costs for replacement/servicing. I chose the option for my immediate needs only and there was no hard sell/pressure from Blaze. He further emailed the various quotes, if I wished to proceed at a future date. Blaze replaced the water cistern and pleasingly, also cleaned up his work area. Overall, an extremely pleasant experience and outcome, from my first contact with FIRP to the conclusion of the task.

I'm pretty satisfied with the plumbing service overall. Heath did an amazing job replacing my in-wall toilet with a regular one. The workmanship was excellent and the installation price was reasonable. Jack also did a great job replacing the valve on the other toilet and installing a water pressure regulator. Overall, a reliable service with skilled plumbers. I'd recommend them.

Prevention

The cheapest toilet repair is the one done before the water bill shows it. If a toilet starts running, even a little, get onto it: a running cistern puts water down the drain all day and all night. And if your water pressure is high, a pressure limiting valve protects every cistern, tap and fitting in the house. Fix-It Right Care Plan members get a home safety inspection of their plumbing every year, and that's a good time to have it all looked at.

The Fix-It Right Care Plan

Areas we service

We fix toilet leaks across Melbourne, Geelong, Canberra and Ballarat: same process, same training, same 10-year warranty wherever you are.

Toilet leak questions

Why does my toilet refill on its own?

Water is getting out of the cistern into the bowl, usually past a worn washer or a valve that isn't shutting off, so the cistern keeps topping itself up. Put a few drops of food colouring in the cistern and don't flush: if it shows up in the bowl, that's your leak.

Is a running toilet really wasting much water?

It can be. A slow trickle adds up over a day and a night, and a toilet that's really running can put a lot of water down the drain without you noticing until the bill arrives.

Why is there water around the base of my toilet?

Usually the seal between the pan and the drain has failed, or the connection behind the pan is leaking. The fix is to lift the pan and reseat it on a new seal. Left alone, it can damage the floor underneath.

Should I turn the water off?

If it's leaking onto the floor, yes. Turn the small tap on the wall behind the toilet clockwise until it stops, and the cistern won't refill. Then call us.

Why does it keep happening?

Often it's the water pressure. If it's too high, the parts in your cistern wear out early, and a new part goes the same way. We'll check your pressure and tell you honestly whether it needs bringing down.

What every job comes with

  • $0 call-out. We come out and look things over. If you don't go ahead, you don't pay.

  • Three written quotes. The first gets you out of trouble, the last takes care of everything the whole-home check found, and there's one in between. All of them are proper fixes.

  • Fixed For Good. Done properly the first time, triple tested before we leave, and backed by a 10-year workmanship warranty.

Every job

Fix-It Now - Pay Later

12 months, no interest, nothing to pay

Get it fixed today, on any job, and make your first payment in a year. It's there because a burst pipe doesn't wait for payday, and neither should the repair.

The same plumber, start to finish

The plumber who comes out and works out what's wrong is the one who fixes it, and he stays with your job from start to finish until it's done properly, top to bottom. We don't send one person to look and another to do the work, and we never pull your plumber off your job to chase the next call. Not many plumbing companies anywhere are that strict about it, and it's why the job gets done right the first time.
