Very happy with the service I received from Gerry on Friday. He identified the issue with my leaking toilet and was able to source the parts needed to fix it, with great care and precision. I really appreciated the extra time he spent looking at my other toilets and under the sinks to determine whether anything else needed monitoring. It was also especially handy to add another job to the service and have my washing machine connected to the laundry sink. I would highly recommend Gerry for his professionalism, care and attention to detail.

We recently experienced the unfortunate problem of two major blockages in our underground plumbing system. We called Fix It Right Plumbing, as they had previously serviced our property and were familiar with our plumbing history. On both occasions, Josh attended, and he was outstanding. Josh is an experienced plumber who approaches every challenge with confidence and professionalism. From the initial phone call that morning to let us know he was on his way, he kept us informed throughout the entire process and explained all the work being carried out. While the repairs were expensive, the quality of Josh's workmanship and his forward-thinking approach made it worthwhile. He identified ways to make future maintenance easier and installed additional access points to the plumbing system. Originally, we only had two difficult-to-access inspection points; we now have five, which will make any future plumbing work much more straightforward. Once the job was completed, Josh cleaned everything up thoroughly. You would never have known the extent of the work or the mess that had been there beforehand. I would highly recommend Josh and the team at Fix It Right Plumbing for their professionalism, communication, expertise, and quality workmanship.

A very positive experience with Fix it Right Plumbing in upgrading both the sewerage and storm water drainage systems with internal moulded pipes inserted within the existing (and degrading) clay pipes. Jarrad was our primary contact and scoped the source of our problem and put forward possible solutions and costs. Richie (the Boss) from Geelong drove up to Canberra with the very sophisticated equipment to do the job. Then the local Canberra crew joined them for the work. The scope of the work from deconstructing a raised rock garden bed and cutting through a concrete path to access the old pipes in addition to the actual plumbing work was done efficiently and reconstructed perfectly. Such pleasant and professional tradesmen. It was a great pleasure to have them do this extremely complicated work for us.

Plumbers in central Canberra, O'Connor and Ainslie

Fix-It Right works right across Canberra and Queanbeyan, and we've done more than 2,000 jobs around the territory in the last two years. Gungahlin alone accounts for nearly 600 of them, with close to 500 each around Tuggeranong and Belconnen and hundreds more across Woden, Weston Creek and Queanbeyan, so wherever you are in Canberra, we're a local team you'll see often.

Canberra is a city built in districts, from the established inner suburbs like O'Connor, Ainslie and Narrabundah through to the newer estates of Gungahlin and the Molonglo Valley. The housing runs from mid-century brick and the older government homes to brand-new builds, so we see the full range, and each district has its own page below.

Canberra's winters are the coldest of any Australian capital, and that shapes the work. Hot water systems get pushed hard and pipes feel the frost, so hot water and burst pipes are a bigger part of what we do here than almost anywhere else. Because we carry the common hot water systems on the vans, we can usually sort a failed one the same day, which matters a lot more at minus four than it does in Melbourne.

Blocked drains are a steady call too, around one in five of the jobs we do across the territory. The established suburbs have mature trees and older sewer lines, and roots are behind close to a third of the blocked drains we clear, so when a drain blocks we camera the line and find the real cause rather than just clearing it.

Across the territory we cover every district, Belconnen, Woden and Weston Creek, Tuggeranong and Gungahlin, along with Queanbeyan and the growing towns just over the border. Each of those areas has its own page with the local detail.

Whatever the job and wherever you are in Canberra, we find the actual cause rather than patching the symptom, and we back it with our 10-year workmanship guarantee. That's been the Fix-It Right way from the start.

The same plumber, start to finish

The plumber who comes out and works out what's wrong is the one who fixes it, and he stays with your job from start to finish until it's done properly, top to bottom. We don't send one person to look and another to do the work, and we never pull your plumber off your job to chase the next call. Not many plumbing companies anywhere are that strict about it, and it's why the job gets done right the first time.

Why we fix it so it lasts, and why that's cheaper for you

Most plumbing gets fixed twice. Once when it breaks, and again when the quick fix gives out. The first visit is rarely the expensive part. The expensive part is the second bill, the day off work, and the water that got into the floor while nobody was looking.

I learned that in 2008 on a toilet in Seaford. The customer's previous plumber had been out every three months for a year, adding a washer each time and charging a small fee. Four visits for the same leak. It wasn't the washer. It was a thirty-year-old valve being hammered by pressure that was too high. We replaced the valve, regulated the pressure, and it was fixed. Not for three months. For good.

That's the job we want to do at your place. Once. Then you forget our name, which honestly is the best review a plumber can get.

The Service Call

How a Fix-It Right plumber works in your Canberra home

  1. We take the time to understand your concern.

    We Say G'day

Most people have no idea what's about to happen when a plumber walks in. How long it'll take. What it'll cost. Whether they'll be talked into something. If they've never used us before, they're standing there with a head full of questions they haven't asked yet.

So the first thing our plumber does isn't plumbing.

They confirm your name. They check the van's not blocking you in. They ask you to tell them more about what's been happening. They ask whether you'd like shoes on or off. Then they ask if they can take thirty seconds to explain how the visit will go.

    They ask. It's your house.

Those thirty seconds are the whole point. Once you know what's coming, the questions stop being worries. You can see the person in front of you has done this before.

  2. Thorough evaluation. A full check of the system, not just the symptom.

    We Listen

Years ago I took a call late on a Saturday afternoon in Edithvale. Their old hot water system had split, family with kids to get to bed. I put in the unit I'd have chosen for my own house, tested it, got paid, and left thinking I'd done a good job.

They rang the next morning. A pipe had let go overnight and flooded the bathroom through into the house. The carpet was ruined.

I went straight back. It was a flexi hose, rusted through, years old. It had nothing to do with the work I'd done and it was going to fail whether I'd been there or not. It just happened to go that night.

But I'd been in that house. I'd been standing next to it. And I hadn't looked.

So now we look at everything. Every job, every house, whether you called us about it or not. The thing that floods your house at two in the morning is almost never the thing you rang about.

Before they start looking, your plumber will say something like this:

"I'm going to check the rest of the plumbing to make sure everything's in good shape. I'm not expecting to find anything, but if I do, is that something you'd like to know about?"

Most people say yes. Some say no, and that's fine too.

  3. Clear choices, explained in plain English. Nothing happens until you say yes.

    We Explain Your Options

Plenty of trades will ask what you're looking to spend before they'll give you a price. We don't do that. You can't answer it properly until you know what things cost, and asking first only tells us how much you'll wear.

The plumbing in a house is usually all linked, so we look at the whole system before we put a price on anything.

Then you get three options. The first is the fix that gets you out of trouble. The last takes care of everything we found. And there's one in between.

Then we pass it over to you. You know your house and what can wait.

All of them are proper fixes. And whatever you see before we start is what's on the invoice at the end.

  4. Most jobs sorted on the day.

    We Get To Work

Once you've chosen, we start. Not another appointment, not another plumber. The same person who looked at it and priced it does the work, straight away.

That matters more than it sounds. When the person quoting is the person doing the job, they can't hand you a number they wouldn't want to stand behind an hour later. And they're not watching the clock to get to the next one. There's no more important customer than the one we're standing in front of.

Every job runs to the same list, start to finish. Drop sheets down, water off, the work done properly, and the place left the way they found it.

My dad said if something's worth doing, it's worth doing right. He was talking about the house he was building for us to live in. That's the standard we ask our plumbers to work to in yours.

  5. The five-star finish.

We Show You Your New Plumbing

Before your plumber leaves, they'll walk you through what they've done. Not a summary from the driveway. They'll actually show you the work, and how to use anything new if there's something to learn.

It's the same list we went through at the start. This is where you get to check we did what we said we'd do, while the person who did it is still standing next to you.

Then we sort the paperwork and payment out on the spot, so there's nothing landing in your inbox next week for work you never saw.

The person behind the name

“If something's worth doing, it's worth doing right.”

Richie learned that from his dad in a shed in Langwarrin, spent four years welding food-grade stainless where a weld is either right or it isn't, and started the business in 2007 with an ad in the local paper and a ute he set up himself. In 2015 he renamed it after his dad's rule: Fix-It Right. Every plumber on the team still trains with him weekly.

Canberra plumbing questions

Do you cover all of Canberra?

Yes. We work right across the territory, from the inner suburbs like O'Connor, Ainslie and Narrabundah to Belconnen, Woden, Weston Creek, Tuggeranong and Gungahlin, along with Queanbeyan just over the border.

Does Canberra's cold weather cause plumbing problems?

It does. Canberra has the coldest winters of any Australian capital, which is hard on hot water systems and pipes, so hot water failures and burst pipes are a bigger part of our work here than in most places. We carry the common hot water systems on the vans so we can usually sort a failure the same day.

Why do drains block around Canberra?

In the established suburbs it's mature trees and older sewer lines, with roots finding their way into the joints. Around three in ten of the blocked drains we clear in Canberra involve tree roots, so we camera the line and find the cause rather than just clearing it.

Who's my water authority in Canberra?

Icon Water covers Canberra and the ACT. If the issue is at the meter or the sewer connection at the street, that's their responsibility, and we'll help you work out what's yours and what's theirs.

Do you cover Queanbeyan and the newer districts?

Yes. We cover Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Googong just over the border, as well as the growth districts like Gungahlin and the Molonglo Valley. Each area has its own page with the local detail.

My hot water's gone in Canberra, can you help fast?

Usually yes, and it matters here with the cold. We carry the common hot water systems on the vans, so if yours can't be repaired we can often have a new one in and running the same day.
