Fixed for good, not fixed for now

A blocked drain that keeps coming back isn't bad luck. Somewhere down that pipe there's a reason: a slight crack, a joint that's moved a few millimetres, a sag holding water. Tree roots don't break into a sound pipe; they find the fault that was already there. Clear the blockage and leave the reason, and you'll be paying to clear it again. That's what's different about how we fix drains. We get to the exact cause, so it doesn't happen again. Fixed for good, not fixed for now.

Which drain is it?

Not sure? Your plumber will tell you on the day.

You've got two separate drainage systems, and they fail differently. If a toilet or sink is backing up, gurgling, or there's water coming up through the grate outside (your overflow relief gully: it's doing its job), that's your sewer. If water's pooling in the yard, downpipes are overflowing in rain, or the problem only shows up when it's raining, that's stormwater. Different system, different causes, different fix. Either way, the next part applies to you.

Why drains block again

Knowing why is how it stays fixed

A drain doesn't block for no reason. Something stops the flow: wipes and foreign objects, grease, tree roots, a joint that's shifted, a belly where the pipe's sagged and holds water, or a pipe starting to collapse. Clearing gets the water moving again. It doesn't touch the reason.

And here's the part most people are never shown: drain problems progress. A root finds a joint: stage one. It grows, catches everything that passes: stage two. The pipe cracks and collapses around it: stage three. Same with a slight misalignment, same with a belly. Every stage-three dig-up started life as a stage-one detail someone didn't find. That's why we put a camera down and find the exact cause while it's still small, and when the pipe itself is the problem, relining can often fix it without digging up your yard at all. We went through 2,102 of our own jobs for our Blocked Drains Report, and roots, not wipes, were behind more blockages than anything else.

It's also why "cheap and cheerful" clearing is the most expensive habit in this trade: you pay per visit while the real problem quietly moves through its stages.

How we find yours

Real method, not guesswork

Every blocked drain job starts the same way: with questions, not tools. What's backing up, how often, what's been done before. And you'll know the price of this first step before we touch a thing.

If it's your sewer, we start with a walk around while the water's still up, because a blocked drain tells you things a cleared one can't: how it behaves before the water's removed, measured against how it behaves after. Then we open the drain and get everything flowing again, and nothing else happens until it is.

If it's stormwater, your plumber starts with a walk around your property and draws your whole site by hand (every downpipe, where the water should leave your block) before anything else. Stormwater gets ignored for years, so finding the fault means joining the dots across your whole system, not guessing at one pipe.

Then, before any camera goes down, we do something almost nobody in this trade does: we teach you how your sewer system works. The same presentation our plumbers use on real jobs: what tree roots look like on camera, what a belly looks like, what a collapse looks like. Then we run the camera together. You see what we see, live, and because you've just been shown what you're looking at, you can read it yourself.

When we find the cause, we locate it, mark it out on the ground at your feet, and put a price on fixing it, before you decide anything.

When my sewerage drain became blocked with tree roots, so I booked on line on Wednesday night making a booking for the following afternoon. We had major/ total blockage in the main sewer drain, no water services in the house, Airbnb rented for a few days, plus helpful neighbours. The first company tried for a couple of days, effectively gave up & left both showers flooded with putrid water. Absolute superstar - he went above and beyond to jet out as much as possible, identify all the breaks, and quote up repairs on the spot. Thane attended our house to inspect a toilet blockage. After 30mins (including looking at plans and digging under some rocks in garden) he found the sewer pit. Apparently the blockage had corrected itself and he also showed me how they operate and what to look for if it happens again. Then proceeded to walk through the house and inspect all taps and plumbing etc to see if they were all OK. Turns out that they were and toilet fixed itself. 40mins total at our house triaging and at no charge for callout and inspect. I got quoted on some other optional plumbing around the house by receiving a fixed quote as soon as he got in the car. I am still in shock at the efficiency and quality of this company. I thought tradies were supposed to be disorganised at best. The friendliness, expertise and professionalism shown by Thane and the communication prior to attending was top notch. I have recommended Fix It Right to many people already and will not go anywhere else in future. Appreciate you guys and the work you do. Keep it up

Fixit Right turned up on time. I booked via their telephone contact and soon after received all the service details by email. Two other local plumbers were contacted by email query and mobile voice messages but no reply provided. Mitch and Dillon arrived and worked out a quote on the scope of work. This is very efficient and provides the costs before work. Part of the drain solution included contacting ACTEW who were on-site in 30 minutes. That was appreciated by all. Mitch and Dillon also had to manually move about a cubic metre of soil to access the buried storm water and drainage pipes which had been fractured by tree roots. A big day's work (0830 - 5pm). I was kept informed of all the steps and options. Very impressive service. Would hire again.

Why does my drain keep blocking?

Because the cause is still down there. A root in a joint, a shifted pipe, a belly holding water: clearing removes the blockage, not the reason. We find the exact cause on camera so it doesn't happen again.

Will you have to dig up my yard?

Often, no. When the pipe itself is the problem, relining can fix it from the inside without excavation. And you'll only ever meet the steps your drain actually needs, one decision at a time.

What will it cost?

What's the grate outside that's overflowing?

That's your overflow relief gully, and it's doing its job: it's built to release a sewer backup outside your house instead of inside it. If it's overflowing, your sewer drain is blocked.

Can tree roots really break a pipe?

Roots don't break into a sound pipe: they find a crack or a joint that's already faulted, then grow. Left alone, that stage-one root can end in a collapsed pipe. Found early, it's a far smaller fix.
