Fix-It Right Plumbing

A dripping tap fixed before it becomes a bigger problem.

A dripping tap is easy to live with until you can't. The drip you hear at night, the one that won't quite turn off. Most of the time it's a worn washer or cartridge and a straightforward fix.

But a tap left dripping is a tap on its way to failing. When that washer finally goes, you're turning the water off at the meter and ringing someone in a hurry. It's worth sorting while it's still the easy version of the problem.

Watch how we fix a dripping tap

Turns out holding a camera steady is harder than it looks when you're used to a wrench.

Film coming soon

Fix the drip, then fix the reason

A tap drips because something inside it has worn: a washer, a cartridge, or the seat the washer closes against. Most of the time it's a straightforward fix. But a washer that wore out early wore out for a reason, and if it's high water pressure, a new washer goes the same way. So we replace what's worn, then check why. Fixed for good, not fixed for now.

Old tap, or mixer?

There are two kinds of tap, and they wear differently. An older tap, with separate hot and cold handles you turn a few times, seals with a rubber washer pressing down on a seat. When it drips, it's usually the washer, sometimes the seat underneath it. A mixer, the single lever that swings between hot and cold, seals with a cartridge inside. When it drips or won't quite turn off, it's usually the cartridge. Either way, we'll know which you've got as soon as we see it.

Why taps drip

Every time you turn a tap off, something inside it presses closed against the water: a washer onto a seat, or the discs inside a cartridge. Thousands of times a year. The washer hardens and wears, the seat gets worn or pitted, grit scores the cartridge, and water starts getting past. That's the drip.

Two things speed it up. High water pressure makes every washer and cartridge work harder, every time it closes. And a tap that's been cranked hard to stop a drip wears the seat faster, so the drip comes back sooner and a washer alone won't fix it. That's why a drip that looks like a washer sometimes turns out to be the seat.

How we fix yours

Every tap job starts with finding out exactly what's worn. And you'll know the price of the first step before we touch a thing.

We find what's worn. We take the tap apart and look: the washer, the seat it closes on, or the cartridge in a mixer. Nothing gets replaced on a guess.

We fix it properly. A worn washer is replaced. A worn seat is re-faced, so the new washer has something smooth to close on. A worn cartridge is replaced with the right one for your tap.

We check the pressure. If it's too high, it's why the tap wore out early, and it'll wear out the next one too.

We test it. We run it hot and cold, turn it on and off, and make sure it shuts off cleanly with no drip.

Through all of it, you only ever face one decision at a time. You'll know what the next step costs before it starts, and nothing proceeds until you're ready.

What we'll recommend, and why

Our rule is a simple one: we only recommend work you'll benefit from. If it's one washer, we'll replace it and that's the end of it. If your tapware is old and the parts keep failing or can't be got, we'll show you and price new tapware. If your pressure is too high, we'll show you the reading and recommend a pressure limiting valve, because it protects every tap and fitting in the house. If we've noticed something else along the way, we'll show you that too: priced, in priority order, your call at your pace.

We get our job right so that you can keep going with yours.

What it costs

Fixing the tap and fixing the reason it wore out are two different decisions, and we price them that way: you'll never get one blurred quote covering a washer, new tapware and a pressure limiting valve. Every price is agreed before work starts.

And if the repair has landed at a bad time, Fix-It Now - Pay Later gives you 12 months with no interest and no repayments.

The cheapest tap repair is the easy version: a washer or a cartridge, done before the tap fails outright. If a tap starts dripping, or you find yourself turning it harder to stop it, get onto it, and don't crank it: that's what wears the seat. And if your water pressure is high, a pressure limiting valve protects every tap and fitting in the house. Fix-It Right Care Plan members get a home safety inspection of their plumbing every year, and that's a good time to have it all looked at.

The Fix-It Right Care Plan

Areas we service

We fix dripping taps across Melbourne, Geelong, Canberra and Ballarat: same process, same training, same 10-year warranty wherever you are.

Dripping tap questions

It's only a small job. Can't I do it myself?

You can, but small jobs aren't always small. A tap washer can turn out to be a cracked seat, and a lot of our calls come from DIY jobs that went wrong. It's usually cheaper to get it done right the first time.

Why does my tap still drip after a new washer?

Usually because the seat underneath is worn, so the new washer has nothing smooth to close on, or because the water pressure is too high. We'll check both, and fix whichever it is.

My mixer tap won't turn off properly. Is that the same thing?

Close to it. A mixer has a cartridge inside instead of a washer, and when it wears, the tap drips or won't quite shut off. A new cartridge, the right one for your tap, usually fixes it.

Do I need a new tap?

Not usually. Most drips are fixed with a washer, a cartridge or a re-faced seat. If your tapware is old and the parts keep failing or can't be got, we'll tell you honestly and price a new one.

What will it cost?

You'll know the price before anything starts, and fixing the tap and fixing the reason it wore out are priced as separate decisions. Our full pricing is on the What it costs page.

The same plumber, start to finish

The plumber who comes out and works out what's wrong is the one who fixes it, and he stays with your job from start to finish until it's done properly, top to bottom. We don't send one person to look and another to do the work, and we never pull your plumber off your job to chase the next call. Not many plumbing companies anywhere are that strict about it, and it's why the job gets done right the first time.
